Binta's and the Great Idea Discussion Questions

1. Binta’s father's idea didn't really surprise me because the story line. I thought he was going to ask the governor to invest in more fishermen equipment. I don’t really think that he was going to ask to adopt a child.

2. His idea was to adopt a child from the western civilization. I believe it was a great idea because he sees that people are not greedy by nature. It also shows how he puts family and children above anything else.

3. Soda’s father did not want her go to school because he feared that she would lose her perspective of family. I'm sure there are people who might still share that same train of thought. However if I had met someone like that I don’t think they would have expressed that feeling to my face. Soda wants to go to school so she can have more meaning in life and I believe her mother most support her because she wants her daughter to be happy.

4. In some western civilization, the art of sharing and caring about one another is lost. If Binta conform into western civilization she might even lose her sense of self worth. Being in the tight community that she's in, She would be surprise on how un-community like western civilization is.

5. I believe western people can learn the sense of a real society and a real community. Western society can that it takes more than one person is taking the responsibility of raising children and not the “only the strong survive” society.

6. I believe education can make people feel a sense of empowerment. If a child grows up to be a Doctor, They feel like they're going to help others. In Soda’s father case, he thought that his value of family would be overshadowed by the value of education.

7. I think that education is truly a gift and that there are some people that do not have the same gift as me.
